Presently, the U. S. Supreme Court is reviewing the most important copyright termination case in decades. The case is Kaffaga v. Steinbeck and should Steinbeck lose this case, the result will be the death knell to artists’ right to terminate contracts. The federal copyright laws allow creators of intellectual property the right to file notices of termination so they can retrieve their copyrights and renegotiate the agreements for present day value.

We must raise $10,000 on behalf of the lawyers and the Authors Guild, in support of an amicus brief, (friend of the court), by June 10, 2020. We are The Artists Rights Coalition, a 501 C3 non-profit, organized for the sole purpose of supporting Artists who need assistance to protect their intellectual property rights. You can learn more about us at: www.ArtistsRightsCoalition.org.

Because this case granted people unrelated to the author, unfettered control over previously terminated works by John Steinbeck, every writer of words, music, computer code, articles, comic books, film and television, music, graphic or fine arts, will be affected by the outcome of this case.

Many of the great musical works of the 60’s and 70’s are in, or are approaching their termination window. This decision by the Ninth Circuit Court, sets a deadly legal precedent, and will likely be the final blow for the right to terminate copyright agreements for generations to come.

“You cannot say you support the arts unless you can say you support the artists’ rights to support themselves.” – Thomas Steinbeck www.artistsrightscoalition.org
